What are Fire Ants?

Fire ant populations have spread all across the U.S., especially the southern states, including Georgia. Fire Ants can be mistaken for regular ants; they are reddish brown to black in color with a cooper colored head and are 1/10 – ¼ of an inch in length. They are a very aggressive species of ant that will run towards a disturbance of their nest and deliver a very painful sting.

Are Fire Ants Dangerous?

Fire ants have a stinger on their abdomen that injects venom into their victim. In humans the pain is similar to that felt after being burned, usually a red welt will appear after being stung; while rare some individuals can have a severe allergic reaction that can lead to death. Fire ants can also attack and kill domestic and wild animals. They feed on young plants and can destroy farms crops. They are drawn towards electrical equipment and can ruin tractors, lawn mowers and if make their way indoors can chew through electrical wires and insulation.

Why Do I Have A Fire Ant Problem?

Fire ants move to new nesting areas through many means both naturally and by accident. They can be brought into your yard after bringing new plants home from a nursery or can even be brought in on your car. Newly mated queens will naturally fly into a new area to make a nest and start a colony; if a colony is very large some fire ants will “bud off” with a new queen to start their own colony or if a colony is disturbed they will move to a different location. Fire ants like open moist areas to nest in so your front or backyard can make a very favorable environment for them.
