What are earwigs?

Earwigs may best be known for the myth that is associated with them – that they crawl into sleeping people’s ears and burrow into their brains to lay eggs. This myth, of course, is false. Even so, no one wants to see earwigs in their house. Monitor Pest Control in Atlanta, GA is here to help.

Adult earwigs or “pincher bugs” as they are also known, are about 5/8 of an inch long and are dark brown to reddish-brown in color.  They can be either winged or wingless and have long smooth bodies with a pair of appendages called “cerci” at the end of their abdomen.  In females the cerci are straight and in males, it has a more curved appearance.

Are earwigs dangerous?

Earwigs are generally considered to be nuisance pests.  They can pinch if they feel threatened but are no real danger to humans or their pets.

Why do I have earwigs in my house?

Earwigs may enter homes through cracks and crevices in foundations and around doors and windows; they will do so if the temperature outdoors becomes too hot, or if the weather is particularly dry.   They can also be brought in on newspapers, lawn furniture, or from other outside things that are brought indoors.  Once inside they can be found under rugs, under potted plants, and in dark, moist areas of your home like bathrooms or basements.  They will come out at night to feed on insects and decaying plant materials found throughout your house.

How do I get rid of earwigs?
