Brown marmorated stink bugs are part of the group of pests known as fall invaders. Stink bugs are easy to recognize because of the triangular
shaped plate on their backs, hence the nickname “shield bugs.” These pests first arrived in PA in 1996 and got their name from their ability to emit
a foul smell from small glands located on their thorax when they feel threatened or are squished. Adult stink bugs are less than 1 inch long,
approximately 17mm and are almost as wide as they are long. They are generally different shades of brown and tan on their upper and lower bodies,
but can have patches of coppery or bluish-metallic on their head and pronotum.
