Oriental Cockroaches

Oriental Cockroaches

What are oriental cockroaches?

The oriental cockroach is a large cockroach species that is commonly found in Georgia and many parts of the country. Like American cockroaches, oriental roaches are an occasional invader and will enter homes and businesses from the outside. You will find them in damp basements, under sinks, and in washing machines. Adults grow up to 1 inch in length and are a shiny dark brown, black color. Females have a wide body and short wings, males have a more narrow body and longer wings but neither can fly.

Are oriental cockroaches dangerous?

Oriental cockroaches can cause harm to humans. They feed and live in areas that harbor dangerous bacteria such as sewers, garbage disposals, bathrooms, and dumpsters. Cockroaches will carry the bacteria from these areas on their bodies and will contaminate your food and food prep areas with it. The bacteria that they carry can induce vomiting, fever, and diarrhea. Many people also have allergies to the cockroaches’ excrement and to the skin that they shed; in some people, the allergens will cause severe asthma attacks.

Why do I have an oriental cockroach problem?

For the most part, these cockroaches are found outdoors during warm wet weather. They have to be near water to survive so when the weather becomes extremely dry they will move indoors to find a warm moist area in which to dwell. You will rarely find them in the upper level of your home or business but instead, they will almost always be found on the lower levels and basements. Like other cockroaches in Sugar Hill and North West Georgia, the oriental cockroach can also be carried into your home in bags, boxes, or even laundry from a laundry mat.

Keep all food off of the counters in sealed containers to prevent them from using it as a food source.
