Brown recluse spiders are medium-sized spiders that range in length from ¼ to ¾ of an inch. Their most distinguishing mark is a violin-shaped mark on the top of the body; they also have three pairs of eyes that are arranged in a unique semi-circle pattern. These spiders are venomous and are found in every county in Georgia.
Brown recluse spiders have venom, but they rarely bite; they usually only bite if they are being threatened or injured. If you are bitten you may not notice right away; symptoms usually appear 2-8 hours after the bite. The most common symptom is redness around the bite and blistering. There may be some pain and itching at the bite site followed by the area ulcerating and necrosis of the tissue that may take months to heal. Some people (especially those with underdeveloped or compromised immune systems) may also develop a severe whole-body reaction that needs immediate medical attention. As soon as you realize you have been bitten you should seek medical attention and, if possible, bring the spider in for identification.
When living inside homes, brown recluse spiders tend to favor darkened storage areas like closets, cupboards, attics, and dry basements. If they are living outdoors on your property you will most likely find them in sheds, piles of debris, and woodpiles. Brown recluses hibernate in the winter so they are most active and therefore come into the most contact with humans from March to October.
Brown recluse spiders can be difficult to eliminate because they generally live outdoors and as their name implies, they are a timid species that can be hard to locate. At Monitor Pest Control we offer Brown Recluse Spider Management to help control and eliminate these spiders.

The best way to control brown recluse spiders is to eliminate harborages and be aware of the areas they like to hide in. Keep your basements, closets, and cupboards uncluttered; make sure that you shake out clothing and shoes before you put them on. Also, make sure cracks and crevices in foundations are sealed and that screens are intact and closed, which will help to prevent them from entering your home.
