Black Widow Spiders In Georgia

What are black widow spiders?

The black widow spider is a species of venomous spider that lives in most counties in Georgia. They are glossy black in color and have a distinct orange or red hourglass shape on their bellies. Females can be 1 ½ inch around with their legs fully extended and have eight eyes arranged in two rows of four. Males are considered harmless and are about half the size of females; they also have red or yellow spots or bands on their sides or back.

Are black widow spiders dangerous?

Black widow spiders are venomous spider and their bites can affect humans; however, it is extremely rare to experience long-term complications or death from the bites. Some people don’t even notice that they have been bitten right away while others say it was a sharp pain. The severity of the bite depends on how much venom was injected, where the bite occurred on your body and your individual sensitivity. The venom travels through the bloodstream and affects the nervous system. Severe cramping usually occurs in the abdominal muscles and back along with tremors, fever, and labored breathing to name a few of the symptoms; they usually subside within a couple of days. If you are bitten you should immediately seek medical attention and collect and bring in the spider for identification if possible.

Why do I have a black widow spider problem?

Black widow spiders prefer to live in areas that are warm, dark, and closed-in to build their web.  Generally, black widow spiders are found around the perimeter of the home and since they are primarily found around the exterior perimeter of homes, crawl doors, and AC units, regular exterior applications similar to what is provided with Monitor Pest Control or once per year pest control application can greatly reduce black widow spider populations.
