What are Asian Lady Beetles?

Though you may be tempted to call an Asian lady beetle a ladybug, they are in fact not ladybugs. Asian lady beetles range in color from yellow and orange to black and can have no spots (generally males) or up to 22 spots. They have a distinctive “w” marking on the base of their head and have a domed-shaped appearance. Asian lady beetles are commonly called Halloween beetles because of their coloring and because they invade homes during the month of October as they look for shelter to overwinter in. These beetles were originally introduced into the United States to control aphid populations.

Are Asian Lady Beetles dangerous?

Asian lady beetles are not considered to be dangerous, they are thought of as nuisance pests. However, they can become problematic because they will invade homes in very large numbers. They can also be dangerous to fruit crops as they will feed on ripened fruit.

Why do I have an Asian Lady Beetle problem?

Asian Lady Beetles are attracted to the warm sunny sides of homes and other buildings as the weather starts to cool. They may enter into your home through cracks and crevices in large numbers and hide in your attic and behind wall voids throughout the cold winter months.
