One of the most common questions our exterminators get is, “What is the difference between a roach and waterbug?” Cockroaches and waterbugs are common pests that we find in Atlanta homes and businesses. Many people use the name interchangeably, which can cause even more confusion. The most common kind of pest that we see referred to as a waterbug is oriental cockroaches.
There are a few significant differences between oriental cockroaches (commonly known as waterbugs) and American cockroaches that can help you identify which one you see in your home.
Color
American cockroaches are reddish-brown, with a section behind their head with a small amount of brown or yellow.
Waterbugs are a shiny dark brown, black color.
Size
American roaches are the largest home infesting roaches, usually reaching between 1.5 and 2 inches long.
Waterbug adults grow up to 1 inch in length.
Antennae
American cockroaches typically have very long antennae.
What about palmetto bugs?
People in Atlanta and the rest of the South commonly see palmetto bugs. Palmetto bugs are no different from roaches, “palmetto bug” is a common name for the cockroach.
