Pests May Invade Your Home This Coming Fall

Summer is coming to a close, and fall is just around the corner. Cooler weather, the changing of the leaves, and football are on the way.

Unfortunately, that means fall pests are too.

Insects invading your home are a very common occurrence as the fall and winter months roll in because insects are opportunists. They’re looking for shelter to avoid the cold weather, and your home is the perfect hibernation spot.

Monitor Pest Control knows how frustrating this can be, so we will list the most common insects that may make themselves your roommate this fall, and we’ll share our fall pest control tips, so Atlanta home and business owners can take care of the infestation.

Where do I need to check for bugs in my home?

It’s all about the design and the features of your home. Certain hues can attract certain insects, such as stink bugs and cluster flies. They tend to move towards light-colored surfaces and walls.

You’ll also want to check your planting beds, as ground beetles and millipedes often seek shelter in soil. Millipedes tend to gravitate towards moist, dark basements as well, so if you have a basement you need to check every dimly lit crevice and corner that you can think of.

Take a look at all of the surfaces outside of your home, specifically if you have cedar or vinyl siding. Insects oftentimes cannot tell the difference between the bark on a tree and the cedar or vinyl siding, so that’s where they often hibernate.

What types of bugs should I look for?

Right now, we’re entering the stages of early autumn, which is the prime season for fruit flies. This is all due to the increasing amount of fruits and vegetables during harvest. Fruit flies move to the cooler temperatures and the scent of fresh fermentation inside. To avoid a massive infestation, you should clean all food preparation stations in your kitchen, seal your garbage cans, and thoroughly rinse your plates, dishes, and containers.

Spiders, house flies, fleas, crickets, and scorpions are incredibly common during this part of the year as well. They hang around lights, sit on walls, crawl inside dark spaces, and hang around moist and dimly lit areas. It’s important to check every room in your home, but please do it safely and responsibly, as scorpions tend to bite when they feel threatened.

What can I do about an insect infestation?

If you believe the infestation isn’t that bad for the time being, you can purchase several kinds of bug sprays online or at your local grocery stores. But in this case, it’s always our best recommendation to let professionals come and take a look at the home to ensure you don’t have a bug problem. The reason for this is because an untrained eye may not see an infestation if there really is one, considering many bugs often enjoy staying hidden.
