How to Keep Mice Out of Your Atlanta Home: Myths and Facts

If you’re trying to prevent mice and rats from invading your home, you’ve may have seen a ton of DYI and home remedies somewhere online or in a Google search. The unfortunate truth is that there are solutions out there that are either just short-term fixes, or don’t fix anything at all.

The team here at Monitor Pest Control encourages all of our customers in and around the Atlanta area to take care of their mice problems in a safe and effective way. We put together a list of some common myths that float around on the Internet, and we’ll also give you actual solutions that we have used and suggested to our customers.

Using Peppermint Oil Keeps Mice Away: FALSE

This is simply not a helpful remedy when it comes to removing mice from your home. While the odor is strong and seems like it could be a nice repellent, the odor will diffuse quickly. Mice are actually intelligent creatures, and have no problem avoiding scents and still rummaging around in your home.

Mothballs Deter Mice: FALSE

While moths do have small amounts of naphthalene, which can be a nice deterrent in large quantities, they don’t have enough of it to keep mice out. If anything, it’ll just make your house smell bad.

Irish Spring soap is a great deterrent for mice: FALSE

Since mice eat animal fat, (one of soap’s main ingredients) many believe that mice love to eat the soap, and will then die from chemical poisoning. This isn’t true. The mice would have to eat an unusually large amount of the soap.

How do I keep mice out of my house?

Fun fact: mice are able to fit through holes the size of a dime. That’s much smaller than you were probably thinking, and there could be holes that big around your home. Closing up these holes with wire mesh and a caulking gun is your best course of action. Trimming shrubs and bushes, and keeping all kitchen items sealed and food areas clean are also great ways to make sure mice don’t intrude.

Simply put, it’s much less stressful and more effective to have a professional pest control unit come to your home and take care of the mice problem for you. Our rodent removal technicians have years of experience in helping our customers in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
