Fruit Flies

What are fruit flies?

Fruit flies are pests that are commonly found in homes, restaurants and grocery stores or basically anywhere there is fresh produce present. They are about 1/8 of an inch in length; they are tan and black in color with bright red eyes. Fruit flies are attracted to rotting or fermenting fruit on which to feed and lay their eggs.

Are fruit flies dangerous?

Fruit flies are generally considered to be a nuisance pest. They do, however, have the potential to contaminate food with bacteria and other disease-producing organisms.

Why do I have a fruit fly problem?

Fruit flies are present in your home in Sugar Hill, Atlanta, or elsewhere in Middle Georgia because they are drawn to the ripened fruits and vegetables that are generally found in your kitchen area. Bringing fruits or vegetables into your home that has had a previous infestation is the most common way that fruit flies enter your house. Adult fruit flies may also enter your home through open doors and windows that are not properly sealed or screened.

Also, make sure that trash receptacles are clean and drains and garbage disposals are unclogged so that standing water doesn’t build up in them. Make sure that all screens are intact and that windows and doors have proper seals around them so that adult fruit flies cannot enter your home and contaminate your food.
