Do Termites Cause Trouble in the Winter?

Most pests aren’t a concern in the cold months of the year. Mosquitoes leave when temperatures drop below 50 degrees. Wasps die when it drops below 45 degrees.

But are termites an issue in the winter? Unfortunately, the answer is yes.

Termites are similar to rodents. Both look for a place to hibernate during the winter, so they usually look for a warm place that provides food and comfortable shelter. That means these two pests are looking to hang out in your home.

Monitor Pest Control understands how irritating this can be. While Atlanta is certainly not the coldest place in America, it still gets chilly and that certainly doesn’t stop these bugs from intruding in your house. Termites eat away at the wood in your home and destroy its foundation, a problem no one wants. It’s important for you to know how critical it is to be on the lookout for them, and to also know the signs of when termites have infested your home.

Why should I be worried about termites?

Termites don’t rest once they’re in your home. They immediately get to work and for 24 hours a day, they’re slowly causing destruction. And winter is usually the time when they’re the busiest.

Termite damage is not only a hassle, it’s also costly. But fortunately, if you’re aware of the signs, you can easily catch a termite infestation early. If they’re spotted quickly, you can minimize the damage and the costs.

Signs that you may have termite damage

Looking for termite damage is not as simple as you may think. They’re obviously tiny creatures, so you won’t notice them walking around your house or hanging out in your backyard. But they do create warning signs while they’re at work.

  • Check your doors and windows. If they’ve become difficult to open or close, there’s a good chance you have a termite problem.
  • If your floorboards begin to buckle or they’ve become noticeably squeakier than usual, that’s possibly termite damage.
  • Walls that bulge and discolor are signs of termites. This also includes the chipping away of wallpaper.
  • Keep a close watch of your ceilings. If they start to sag a little bit, that could be termites.
What’s the best termite prevention method?

There are many ways you can prevent or destroy termites, but the best way to get rid of them is to let a professional take over. Monitor Pest Control has years of experience dealing with these pesky critters, and we could save you tons of money and hassle in the long run.
