Carpenter Bees

What Are Carpenter Bees?

Carpenter bees are a large species of bee commonly found in Middle Georgia, and range in size from ½ to 1-½ inches in length. Their abdomen is black and shiny, with the males are orange and black in color and the females completely black. They are often mistaken for bumblebees but unlike bumblebees, which are very social insects, carpenter bees are very solitary.

Are Carpenter Bees Dangerous?

Male carpenter bees cannot sting but are extremely aggressive and will fly and buzz around your head in an effort to keep you away from their nest. Females are capable of stinging but rarely do. They are usually being directly handled or threatened if a sting occurs. If a person is stung there is always the possibility of an allergic reaction occurring. Carpenter bees and their offspring will create tunnels in wood however it’s woodpeckers that do the most damage to structures.  They actually peck the carpenter bee-infested wood to get to the resting larva in the tunnels.

Why Do I Have A Carpenter Bee Problem?

Carpenter bees use the wood in and around your home to make tunnels for a nesting area and a place to overwinter; not as a food source. They like making nests in wood that is unpainted and prefer weathered softwoods; places on your property like decks, porches, and sheds generally meet these needs. Breeding pairs often come back to the same area year after year increasing the damage that is done to your structure.

How Can I Prevent A Carpenter Bee Problem In The Future?

The best way to prevent carpenter bees from choosing your property for their nests is to paint and stain wooden structures around your home like porches, sheds and decks. Carpenter bees do not like to make nest in treated wood so it can be an effective deterrent method.
