What are mice?
The house mouse and the deer mouse are the two most common species of mice that enter homes and businesses in Middle Georgia. The common house mouse is 5 1/2 to 7 inches in length with large ears and small dark eyes; they are grey or brown in color with a light tan belly. Deer mice are about the same size at approximately 6 inches in length; they have grayish brown fur with white bellies and legs. Deer mice get their name from their ability to jump and run very quickly.
Are mice dangerous?
Both types of mice can carry many diseases that will infect humans. Mice will contaminate your food and food prep areas with Salmonellosis which will cause bacterial food poisoning. Both species are carriers of the deadly Hantavirus; they also carry Leptospirosis and lymphocytic diseases along with many others. Mice are also very dangerous to the structure of your home; they will chew through dry wall, structural supports, plumbing pipes and electrical wires, which can cause fires and water damage.
Why do I have a mouse problem?
Though they may be a problem all year round, mice generally enter homes and businesses in the fall and winter months looking for food, water and shelter. Mice, especially deer mice, are excellent climbers and jumpers and can squeeze through tiny cracks and crevices to enter buildings. Mice generally reside in areas where they can forage off of humans.
