Indian Meal Moths
What are Indian meal moths?
Adult Indian meal moths are winged insects that are capable of flying; they range in length from 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch. The rear half of their wing is either a bronze, copper, or dark gray color and the front half of the wing is a yellowish-gray color with a dark band between the two. Indian meal moths are also referred to as pantry pests, stored product pests, and/or food infesting pests. Indian meal moths are found in stored food products, items such as cereal, grains, dried fruit, dry pet food, pasta, and flour are where the females lay their eggs. The eggs will then hatch and the cream color larvae will feed on the food source.
Are Indian meal moths dangerous?
Indian meal moths do not bite or sting, but they do contaminate food products. Adults will contaminate stored food with their eggs and then once hatched the larvae will eat the stored food and also breed in those areas.
